Parents & Friends of Southeastern Virginia Training Center
Parents & Friends of Southeastern Virginia Training Center, Inc. [a 501(c)(3) Organization incorporated in 1981] is a nonprofit Corporation. The organization consists of parents, friends, guardians, authorized representatives, and other supportive citizens. The primary mission is to promote the well-being and development of all persons who reside at the Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC).
Parents & Friends gives support for
families, individuals, and organizations advocating “quality care” and
“placement choice” for the mentally handicapped residing at SEVTC.
Parents & Friends provides vital assistance to the Center Director and his staff to effectively meet the needs of individual SEVTC residents. Examples include:

Enhancing the development of education, training, and habitation,

Protecting the rights of mentally retarded citizens, and
-
Encouraging the federal, state, and local legislators to achieve these goals.
Parents & Friends works diligently to secure programs and funding from the Governor and the General Assembly for quality long-term care of the SEVTC residents
Activities and Projects

Supporting Families of SEVTC Residents.

Maintaining Contact Throughout the Year With State Legislators to Apprise Them of the Needs and Requirements of SEVTC and its Residents.

Participating in the Public Budget Process by Annually Delivering Presentations to Budget Hearings in the General Assembly Building in Richmond.

Assisting the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS) by Reviewing Planning and Other Contracted Studies, and Providing Feedback Relative to Directives, Human Rights Regulations, Operations, Planning, Safety, and Proposed Changes Impacting Quality Care, Choice, and Facility Maintenance.

Sponsoring “Open House” Opportunities for Legislators of the Commonwealth to Visit SEVTC and Meet With Parents & Friends, Staff, and Residents.

Hosting an Annual Watermelon Feast for all Residents.

Contributing to SEVTC Volunteer Services.
